Amari Area
The Amari area is located at the centre of Crete and is only 1 hour away from the town of Rethymnon.
It is separated into two municipalities, the municipality of Sivritos and the municipality of Kourites.
The Amari area is an ideal destination for the traveller who wants to discover the real and unknown Crete, with its natural beauty and its traditional people.
There is no other place, where you can find the excellent combination of nature’s creations, but also man’s creations such as places of archaeological and local architectural interest and villages still following a traditional way of life.
In the Amari area, you will find mountains, ravines, rivers, springs, caves, potholes, menhirs, fossilized shells and a unique variety of flora and fauna. It is, as it has been named, “The ecological paradise of Crete”.
You can, also, visit Minoan settlements, Byzantine churches, bell-towers, cave churches, stone built bridges and stone built sheep and goat folds (“mitata”), old watermills, wine presses, oil presses, ancient stone built fortresses etc.
